And then there was soccer golf!!!

Soccer golf is an idea that came to us in a time of necessity. We were sitting around one summer afternoon, just Caleb and myself, and trying to figure out some way to kill our boredom. That was when we were struck by the sheer genius of playing a game very similar to disc golf (or frisbee golf) except played with a soccer ball. We wanted to play some soccer, but with only two people and lacking the resources and energy to recruit players for a pickup game, we needed something simpler and more parsimonious.

An apology to any viewers of British persuasion for the desecration of the revered sport of football, but since we are beginning in America, we will simply call it soccer. The sport of soccer golf has a number of good things going for it: It can be played with only one or two people (although, the more the merrier obviously), It requires very little equipment (soccer ball, feet, open space), It is a good chance for soccer players to improve their skills in long kicks, short accurate kicks, and short chips, It is fun, It is not complicated, yet can be adapted to many variations and infinite possibilities of course terrain and difficulty.

It is our hope that others will follow our lead and establish their own soccer golf courses in their own local areas. The course can have any number of holes (9 or 18, though typical, are still quite arbitrary), and any level of difficulty. It can even be indeterminate, with holes being created on the fly. As we continue to advance in our level of involvement, we plan on traveling to nearby parks and schools and develop an expansive system of courses, although this will depend on a number of factors, primarily whether or not we can remain committed and resist the urge to take a back seat and let apathy keep us in a state of idling.

Our flagship course is located in Pittsfield, ME, in Manson Park. It consists of a standard 18 holes, and requires no setup or planning, as no soccer golf course should.
